Angry Birds Epic – Review

unnamed

We’ve seen them in space, driving go-karts, and even starring in their own cartoon series, but this never happy group of fowls are taking another step away from the format that made them so popular. Don’t worry they wont be losing any of the characters we have come to love including birds, pigs, and eggs, they will all be starring in a brand new strategic RPG. Angry Birds Epic is a game with familiar role-playing elements, but completely at the other end of the RPG spectrum. There’s no princess to rescue or the or any side-quests to unlock or towns to explore. Angry Birds Epic is all about turn-based fights that you can select from a map, with a sprinkle of RPG elements.

Don’t be put off by the start of the game, as the combat can seem fairly simple. You drag a bird to a pig in order to attack, by tapping on the enemy you trigger a defense move. Dragging one bird to another will in turn increase their stats. Randomlly there’s also a chili that’s involved in some kind of special move.

As you progress through the game, you’ll rescue and retrieve more game for your gang. Following the Angry Birds format, each one has its own variety of hardcore stats and special attacks. On the surface this game seems pretty straightforward, but on playing I discovered a lot of added bonuses. There’s a vast array of bad piggies to fight who in turn have their very own tactics, and a whole assortment of RPG-like elements, such as crafting new weapons, using loot to brew potions and swapping headgear to switch to a completely new class.

The battles can become a little repetitive, but fun non the less. Once the game opens up and you have a ragtag crew of birds, then you’ll discover a whole new level to this game.

To keep you interested there are daily rewards such as the golden pig, alongside bonuses such as a roulette wheel whenever you defeat some enemies and complete a mission. As coins can take a long time to acquire the game has a built in IAP system, allowing you to purchase goodies such as coins in order to progress through the game faster.

I’m all for IAP as it allows developers to gain some needed funds, but Angry Birds Epic starts to feel like a guy outside your door shaking a bucket every 5 mins, it can start to get irritating. As the game progresses, it becomes more challenging, and enemies will become much harder to defeat.

Those of you who aren’t familiar with the RPG formula, may struggle a little to get to grips with it, and overall that’s not really a huge deal, as Angry Birds Epic is a joy to play if you like a unique and in-depth challenge. Ignoring the IAP system, this game offers a great game experience, while making it a challenge sometimes, and offering people incentives to keep playing.
