BACtrack Mobile Breathalyzer – Review

Have you ever been on a night out and been suspicious that someone might not be as wasted as they want you to believe? With BACtrack’s Mobile Breathalyzer, you can find out. With this futuristic device, you can keep tabs on your alcohol intake, share your state of inebriation with your friends, and even track how long till you sober up.

This tiny, lightweight breathalyzer pairs with your smartphone, and gives you your current blood-alcohol content (BAC), and allows you to chart your drinking habits. Having this device could be the one thing to stop the guy who is “fine to drive”. Its also the only portable, bluetooth breathalyzer i’m aware of.

This thing comes in at only 1.75 x 2.75 x 0.63 inches and around 50 grams, making it a pocket size device, that actually fits in your pocket. The body is made from plastic. It’s only got one button to turn it on or off, and a plastic tube at the top. What makes this device so cool is what’s inside. The BACtrack Mobile Breathalyzer uses an Xtend™ Fuel Cell Sensor, the same used by police or hospitals. This is a professional device, in a consumer market.

The way they made the device so small and light is the complete lack of a display. All the information is sent to the Android app. It does this using Bluetooth 4.0, this makes it compatible with any Android phones running 4.3 and up. It has a MicroUSB slot to charge it and three mouthpieces for the germaphobic out there.

You wont need any medical degrees to use this device either. Simply download the app, open it, then turn on the device. The app then pairs with the device, and is ready to go. When you take a reading you are given a ten second count down before you have to blow.

You get a number of pages displaying information, you get the initial results, you can then go to another page to see what effects you should be having. BACtrack also gives you a timeline for how long it will take you to  sober up. There are also social options, stuff like mapping, images etc. One thing I keep forgetting is that you have to wait 15 mins after drinking to test. I investigated this, and this is true for all breathalyzers.

It might seem random but this device is actually a lot of fun. People I know will want to test it and also suprised how long they have to wait to sober up. Its also a great conversation piece. Battery life is amazin. I charged it upon getting it delivered and have done around 60 tests and haven’t had to re-charge it.

This device will set you back $150, but it is worth it for the tech you get. But if its more novelty than accuracy, you can get BACtrack’s Keychain Breathalyzer for just $30.
