Bytes Insight – Review

There are various apps around which can tell you your internet usage. I currently use the My Vodafone app which keeps track of the usage for me. But I have always wondered which apps take up the most data. When I refresh Google+ on the go is that a lot of data?

Then while writing up the review for another app Greenify, I noticed the developer did one other app. Thats when I looked up Bytes Insight, this app displays the internet usage per app in the status bar. I can see how much data a Google+ update will cost me compared to uploading some images to Dropbox. This app is very simple to setup, download and turn it on. You can have it so it monitors wifi and mobile data, but for me I was interested in only the mobile data usage. So by flicking a switch I can now see in my status bar the current internet usage.

The app has recently received a massive update and has bought in some new features:

  • Light-weight focused implementation in extremely low footprint. Start-on-demand background service for only 3M approximately (vary with devices and Android versions)
  • Absolutely ZERO memory and battery consumption when network is inactive.
  • Hide status-bar indicator when network is not being actively used.
  • Selectively monitor only cellular (mobile network) data traffic or all network traffic.
  • Per-app usage statistics within expandable notification. (expandable only on Android 4.1+)
  • Minor traffic (sensitivity configurable) will not be notified.
  • Click the notification to reset the traffic statistics (on Android pre-4.1) or additional actions on notification for quick reset and settings (on Android 4.1+).

To be honest there’s not much else to say about this app, other than it has a great developer behind it and it is simple to use. They have found a common issue and have issued an app to solve it. Bytes Insight is free so I suggest everyone go and buy it.
