Ice Rage – Review

Billed as bringing ice hockey into the 21st century, Ice Rage plays less like a hockey game and more like pong or those air hockey games in the arcade. Games consist of 2 players on each side (one goalie and one attacker) on a very small rink. There’s also very little strategy involved in the gameplay  if you have the puck keep shooting till you get the goal, if you opponent does attack him till you get it. The controls relate to the simplicity of the game: a virtual joystick and a button that doubles as the offense/defense action are the only buttons you have. Though if needed you can remove the need for the joystick and simply press the button to shoot while your player  is controlled by the games AI.

Ice Rage offers three different difficulties, with the hardest of them giving you control of your goalie. I tested this and found it very hard considering that your joystick will control both your players simultaneously. Also featured are a variety of characters including John Gore of Minigore fame and Enviro-Bear (who I needed to look up). Updates will be incomming, which will include more characters. Some of the characters do have hidden stats such as being harder hitters, as far as gameplay is concerned Ice Rage is about as basic as they come.

While the single player gameplay may get old quickly  it’s actually well suited for multiplayer and becomes the biggest highlight of Ice Rage. Multiplayer adds another set of controls opposite and gives you a top view of the game area. This felt a little cramped on the HTC One, but looks very good on the Nexus 7 and any other tablets. The games last 1:45 so it just quick enough to not get boring, and makes every goal count.

Once you eventually get over the graphics, and characters, you’ll find there really isn’t much else offered by this game. There is no career mode, achievements, addons or extras. You can see that the developers were really going for an arcade style game, one which you can pick up and play for a while and then leave. Even a leaderboard would add some other level of competition, but for the time being this game is all you get.

I hope as this is an intial release, there may be an update in the future to add some extra characters, tweaks and maybe even a new game mode. If you download this game and expect any kind of depth, prepare to be disappointed, as that’s not what the developers were going for. However, if you go into it knowing that it’s a simple arcade hockey game, you should have a good time, particularly with its multiplayer.
