MarkAsRead for Gmail – Review

There are apps out there, that try to solve one issue. MarkAsRead for Gmail is one of those apps. As its name says, it lets you mark Gmail messages as read straight from the notification area. When you now pull down to read an email, in between the usual archive and reply buttons, MarkAsRead sneaks a “Read” button.

MarkAsRead for Gmail does this by intercepting the Gmail notification, dismissing it, and creating a copy with the button to mark the email as read added. MarkAsRead for Gmail does require some permissions, including the ability to read your network state. It requires notification access which makes it capable of reading their content.

It can’t access email credentials, but it is able to see each message that comes in. I will admit that the whole app does require a bit of trust, but the developer, Rohan Puri, works at the MIT Media Lab and doesn’t come off as the snooping type.

Its a quick review, but to be fair is a simple app. It does exactly what it says it does. At the moment it only allows one Google account, but hopefully this’ll change with future updates. The app will set you back 79p, which is a drop in the ocean.
