Apparently Metroid has been a successful series of games on Nintendo, and we now have an Android clone of this platform game.
The first thing you notice when opening the game is that the graphics are top-notch. Futuristic with neon lighting and 3D art, the graphics sell this game right from the start. The soundtrack has an 8-bit retro feel which really suits this type of game.
Hali (the main character) is accompanied by a little flying robot kitten called SPAKK (Self Propelled Aerial Kinematic Kitten in case you were wondering). Unfortunately it looks nothing like a kitten and provides an excuse for some plot-driven dialog which you’ll soon be skipping through. Your mission should you choose to accept it, is to collect data cores, fight bosses and free sectors.
Starting the game brings us to familiar platformer territory, with (repositionable) touch controls for left, right, jump and fire. Jumping towards a wall also allows you to hang on and slowly slide down it. To keep things interesting you can enter a random alphanumeric code, and each level is generated based upon it. This potentially means an endless number of levels to play, meaning you’ll never be sure what’s coming up next.
As with most free games these days, you have the option of in-app purchases to buy better weapons. However these are totally optional and you can continue to enjoy the game without them, earning your weapons the good old-fashioned way.
I’ve never been a Nintendo guy so I can’t comment on how well it stacks up against Metroid, but based on it’s own merits Megatroid is a great platformer with excellent graphics and a thumping soundtrack. Follow the link below to get it free from the Play Store…
