We loved the retro-goodness of RC Racing game Re-Volt Classic when we reviewed it back in May, and now with over 2.5 million downloads (for a paid game) it seems that we weren’t the only ones.
So when we heard about the release of Re-Volt 2 we were excited to get our hands on it. However rather than the true sequel the name suggests, Re-Volt 2 is more of an upgrade which incorporates a move to the freemium payment model (vote here on how much you like in-app purchases). The maps have been tweaked and some new vehicles added with free to play challenges and in-app purchase access to additional upgrades and the multiplayer grand prix mode.
The game-play itself is buttery smooth, but one issue I had with the game was severe lag while navigating the menus. Press an option and be prepared to wait for as much as 5 seconds to see a response. The same lag was evident on both my S4 and Nexus 7 (2013), neither of which have had any issue running other high-end games. This along with the repeated prompts to log in with your Facebook account are a pity as they can be a deterrent to launch the game when you’re just looking for a quick blast.
As the game-play remains the same, I won’t rehash our previous Re-Volt Classic review. If you’ve already bought and played the Classic version to death, then there’s little here to re-awaken your interest. However if the price previously stopped you checking it out, then you can now give it a try for free.
