Review: The Drift Stealth 2 Action Cam

Review: The Drift Stealth 2 Action Cam

I have never owned an action cam before. The closest I go to owning one was when I used a friends Go-Pro Hero 4. Drift sent me their Stealth 2, which has to be the smallest, lightest camera I have ever seen. I found it perfect when out cycling as its more aerodynamic, then the box shaped Go-Pro.

The Stealth 2 is splash proof, so great for cycling through puddles, or even running through fords. There is a waterproof case offered, for the more extreme folks out there. The entire body is made of a rubberised material, making it feel like it could take a serious bump and not be affected.

On the underside of the Stealth 2 is an industry standard screw, for mounting tripods and other photography-related accessories. This was a nice little surprise and meant I had a bevy of accessories already at home that I can use. The three buttons at the top are hard to press, due to their protection, but you get a very reassuring ‘beep’. This confirms that you have started recording, which is useful if you have it already mounted on your bike.

The back of the camera features a strong robust cover that protects the micro SD card, HDMI and USB ports. This is removed by way of a dial, which I found difficult at times to tighten and loosen. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it means that the back plate will protect your ports.

The lens on the front can rotate to 300º, I found this great for ensuring the camera is always shooting landscape, even when I mounted it in some unusual positions. I was really impressed by the overall battery life of the product, I was able to shoot in 1080p at 30fps for around three hours.

The Stealth 2 also rocks WiFi connectivity, which means it can be paired to a smartphone or the remote (which is sold separately) both of which I think are very useful for setting up the best shooting angles. As the app allows you to see the viewfinder and set it up.

Footage from the Stealth 2 appears considerably less fisheyed around the edges, when compared to the Go-Pro. I found the colours and picture to be crisp, as displayed in the video below (1080p 30fps):

The above video is raw footage and hasn’t been altered. The sound quality is obviously not going to be great, but this is an action cam and not something you will be doing review videos with. Other shooting modes are: 960p at 30 fps, 720p at 60fps, 720p at 30fps and WVGA at 120fps.

Mounting ability on the Stealth 2 is considerably versatile, strong, sturdy and equal to the Go-Pro. In order to test the camera I used a handlebar mount, this are sold by Drift separately. This worked great and was very secure.

I found the camera very easy to use, with simple intuitive menus and utilitarian mounts. On screen menus are colour coordinated which is a nice touch, allowing you to glance at the screen and quickly see which shooting mode you are in.

The Stealth 2 is a great, lightweight, and well designed camera that is very easy to use. If you’re like me and not a fan of the fish eye effect seen on GoPro, this is an attractive option. In addition, the rotating lens is a superb feature.
