Looks and Materials

A shiny black plastic set of headphones with fake leather ear cups. That doesn’t really read well, if you’re looking for a premium set, you’ll likely not be too interested here. What we have is a pair of Bluetooth cans that you can use to listen to music or Hangout on Google Plus for around the £30 price bracket.  (Keep the price in-mind when reading on.) Built in the classic black styling, that you’ve seen before, they actually look good. Myself, I prefer this design, some won’t but that’s fine. This pair actually fold into themselves so they can be easily thrown in a bag, when travelling. That’s a big plus point for me. Maybe use a drawstring bag so you don’t scratch the finish.

In the box

Not much really.. The headphones, micro USB and instructions. These can be charged from any USB port or connect to a wall charger, I’m sure most people have loads of them lying around these days.

Ease of set-up and use

Very very simple instructions provided here for set-up. Sometimes you get a new headset and you have to jump through hoops with weird button combinations. Not here!

  • Power on… Blue light flashes… Hold power button for 5 seconds
  • Pairing… Red and blue lights flash… Hold power button for 7 seconds
  • Power off… Red light flashes then turns off… Hold power button for 4 seconds

Comfort

I’ll be honest. I wish the cups were a little bigger because you have to mess around for a few minutes for them to sit right. Not uncomfortable but a bit of flapping about. The cups don’t sit flush either so there’s a slight gap. (Expect others to hear what you’re listening to when turned really really loud)

Music and voice quality

And these SD50’s are surprisingly loud. Call quality isn’t perfect, with a slight hissing, but not poor, just OK. Could have been my connection when in a hangout or a number of different reasons. (Your experience may differ) Depending on what you’re listening to this set can provide a decent audio experience. Please keep the price in-mind. These aren’t Grado PS1000 cans. These are fairly inexpensive headphones that do a job.

Buttons and placement

Another good point about the Soundware SD50’s are the buttons. Only three buttons on each cup that can be easily pressed with your thumbs when in use. These are on the back and you can clearly see them on the main picture at the top of this post. Play, forward and back on left piece. Power, volume+ and volume – on right piece. Right side is also where you’ll find an LED for when in use and pairing. This is my only real negative point. It’s too damn bright! It’s like a landing light on an airplane.

Conclusion

A pair of headphones for around £30 that sound pretty good and great for Google Hangouts, only let down by the fitting around the ear and an over powerful LED light, I’d still fully recommend purchasing the Soundware SD50 if you happen to be in the market for something around this price range.
