Bombcats – Review

Lets get the backstory out the way. Theres kittens in blue energy cages, the parents decide the best solution is to blow up and break them out.Less of a backstory, more ramblings of a madman.

You will get a strong Angry Birds vibe from this game. Theres a lot of aiming and slinging, but after playing it for awhile, you will start to notice that this isn’t an Angry Birds clone, but a game all on its own. The primary objective is to use your cat to break the kitten out of the energy cage, this is done by either blowing up and ramming into it. There are normally two or three different ways to complete the level, but there is always only one way to do it perfectly. This involves collecting suns and gems, which of course makes loads of sense.

Another Angry Bird quality is that you acquire up to seven different cats, each one having a different ability. Most levels will only give you one type of cat to use, though you do get a couple where you have an arsenal of different cats. Each cat has a certain number of shots before it blows up, but there’s also a fuse that blows it up. As you progress through the game, you will learn how to re-launch in mid air, ride walls, and other tricks. This game is incredibly simple to use, and very easy to pick up. Now this review would be over if that was the entire game, but Bombcats decides to mix it up after a couple of levels. The “basic” gameplay mode is callec Kitten Rescue, but there are also three other game types.

The first one is called Marathon,  this gives you some extra jumps to help you get your cat as far as possible without blowing up.  The Challenge game plays in an old level, but gives you a new cat or cats, with only a limited number of attempts. Time Trial takes stitches together five levels you’ve previously played, you then have to complete them all in a certain time to get all three suns.

I’ll be honest I didn’t like the graphics for Bombcats, they do remind me a lot of Angry Birds. The iOS original of this game is full of IAP’s, but if you pay for this Android special edition, then you get the re-tooled version which contains none. The developer has spent a lot of time going through and re-designing the game to not rely of IAPs.

So by paying £1.99, you get all the ingame currency you can wish for. This can be spent on upgrades, costumes, special powers, and one-time boosts. All of these helping you get a little further in this game, all except the costumes which achieve nothing.
