Fieldrunners 2 – Review

Instead of altering the tower defense gameplay in Fieldrunners 2, the developers decided to refine them. One improvement I noticed was the addition of a path marker. The original had the runners following a set path, they would just keep going straight until something got in their way. Now they will run across the battlefield more realistically, constantly changing their direction depending on where you place your towers. Pausing the game will show the current path they will follow, this means you can no long trap them in a circle of machine guns.

The path addition makes the game more about strategy than just placing guns. They have also added a much more developed AI to these runners, if the path is backed up then runners at the back will simply choose a different route, I found this out the hard way.

There have been some IAP game enhancements. You can buy these through the system, with your winnings or with cold hard cash. These can include proximity mines to take down a tougher enemy  and the ability to rewind the game back 3 moves. These power-ups can only be used a certain number of times per level, though, and can be purchased with coins earned from in-game performance (completing missions, getting kills).

Fieldrunners 2 has also added a few new modes, by me playing through them I have found these can be hit and miss. Theres the Sudden Death Mode which leaves you with just three lives while  a staggering stream of enemies bombard you, and then all you have to do is kill a certain amount. I have found Sudden Death maps can take a couple minutes, whereas something like Survival Mode can take a half-hour or more, offering a nice change of pace, and also a nice treat for a long train ride.

One game mode I didn’t have fun with would be Puzzle Mode, where you try to force fieldrunners into an already laid out obstacle using the path marker to indicate where they’ll be heading. I felt this mode was based around trial-and-error and feels half-arsed when compared to other modes, especially since the new fieldrunner AI makes them hard to predict. But, through every mode including Puzzle Mode, Fieldrunners 2 still manages to look gorgeous. There’s an almost crispness and charm to the graphical style, which makes me think of team fortress or a CG movie. Despite the obvious death and destruction the game manages to make the whole thing look great.

The game is offered as a HD and a normal version both around the same price. I really liked the first game and starting to fall in love with this sequel, I highly recommend it. For under £2 you are getting quite a good deal.
