Karateka Classic – Review

Karateka Classic is the original game shot for shot, with retro touches, such as sampled floppy disk noises, optional video scanlines, and the choice of a color CRT or a monochrome display (in amber or green screen). Also included is the nostalgia of playing a classic game all over again.

You play as The Hero, and you must fight your way through the hoards of skilled fighters loyal to the evil warlord Akuma, who has it happens has kidnapped the princess Mariko. Your only two sets of weapons yours fits and legs! You must attempt to fight your way through ever-more-powerful enemies, going deeper into Akuma’s sanctum, in the end fighting the warlord himself. From experience this can take a lot of retrys before you can complete it, but if you stick with it you’ll be at the warlords gate before you know it.

The original Karateka was played on a two-button, analog joystick. While it would’ve been easier to emulate that control style, Karateka Classic features an all new control system, which consists of icons on the left and right edges of the screen that correspond to in-game actions — stand, crouch, punch up, punch straight, punch downwards, etc.

Another addition will be the much used rewind feature; after reaching a certain point in the game, when you swipe to the left will revive your character and start things off at the point of your most recent victory. The original Karateka was a one-life affair — when you die, it’s game over.

Karateka Classic brings a relic of the ’80s to your Android device. I would suggest this to most people even if its to see what all the fuss is about. It’ll only cost you 65p for this piece if gaming history.
