RAVPower Luster Mini 2-in-1 3000mAh External Battery Charger – Review

If you’re bored of the plastic boxes external batteries come in, then Ravpower has you covered. The Ravpower Luster’s (£10.99) sleek design and more than adequate 3,000mAh cell make it a great portable charger. If you’re after looks and not looking for a load of features then this is the kinda thing you’d be looking for.

The Luster is a cylindrical design and makes it stand out from the other devices in the market. Its small and lightweight, meaning it will fit into a handbag or pocket, making it more portable than square, bulky battery packs. Every Luster is made of brushed aluminum, my particular unit was black (coz black is cool), but it also comes in black, blue, pink, and silver.

On one end is a glass-covered LED flashlight that toggles between two brightness levels and a strobe light mode. This is the great part about this charger, the LED light is awesome, its brighter then my phones torch, and that means it can be used. This is unlike other chargers, that throw in a torch and the last minute and it doesn’t really work. As the LED is bright, I found after long periods of use, the Luster got noticeably warm.

The other end of the Luster is plastic, with a micro USB port for charging it, a full-size USB port for charging other devices, and a button for activating the flashlight. Pass-through charging is supported, but this may be impractical as the two ports are so close together, the bulk of your USB connector may stand in the way. I did miss a battery level indicator, but it did tell me when it was charging (red led) and when it was full (blue led). The button may seem small, but this means that you don’t run the risk of turning it on accidentally.

With the Luster you get a micro USB cable and a metal clip that snaps on, allowing you to clip it to a pocket securely. This is 100% micro-usb, as there are no additional connectors supplied.

The 1-amp USB port is really designed for phones; I did try with my Nexus 7 and it took a little longer to charge it. I tested the Luster’s 3,000mAh cell with my completely drained HTC M8, I saw around 5 hours of charge. This is perfect for emergencies, if you need an extra kick to make it home.

The Ravpower Luster is a great little battery charger, especially at £10. if you’d after a more stylish than practical battery charger, the Ravpower Luster is an attractive battery that’ll do just fine for most people.
