Review: Universal Magnetic Cell Phone Car Mount from Pop-Tech

I’ve never really used car mounts. I don’t have any reason explaining why I haven’t. I just don’t. I set my phone in my center cup holder and that’s always worked fine for me. Well this little accessory taught me different. When I first knew I’d be receiving this car mount for reviewing, I dismissed it and figured I’d take a closer look and get to know it better once it arrived. The Pop-Tech universal cell phone car mount arrived in my mailbox, packaged in a little white box. Prior to receiving the package I was assuming it would be much larger. So the small box just didn’t seem correct. To my surprise this gadget, although small, works in a big way.

So I immediately took it out to my car and started to set it up. Following the directions, cleaning all surfaces with the provided alcohol pad, I proceeded to adhere the main mount to a location that worked for me. Honestly though, it took me a good hour to choose a final location for the mount. I was just not keen on sticking a 3M adhesive to a surface on my dash, worrying it may leave a mark or pull something off later. The Pop-tech mount is unlike most mounts I’ve seen that use a larger suction type attachment method. Full disclosure however, if I hadn’t just bought this new car last month, I might not have given it as much thought.

Now it’s attached to my dash

I’ve adhered the metal disk to the back of my phone in a location that works best, and attached it to the magnetic surface of the mount. The next 2 weeks I commute my 40 miles to work and back using the mount. I love it! The mount has held strong. The magnet is strong enough for all speed bumps, railroad tracks, potholes, or stop shorts, I have encountered through the 2 weeks. It swivels fine. Occasionally, I’d rotate it and it would slip off the magnet while in my hand. Maybe the disk on the back of the phone could be a bit bigger in diameter, but that didn’t take away from its usefulness. My one and only legitimate issue with the mount is that I have a Spigen Rugged Armor case on my Nexus 6P and the disk is meant to be applied to the actual phone. Although, I didn’t see any written information that this should work through a case, one of the images on the site clearly show it being applied under the case. The magnet unfortunately wasn’t strong enough to keep it mounted with the case on. I cannot say this would apply to every case out there of course.

It’s still a great compact car mount that allows you many options for placement because of its size. So overall, I will continue to use it as it’s been very useful and convenient for me, now not having to pick up the phone, and having the screen facing me at all times. If this little accessory is calling your name, and you want to try it out, Pop-tech is offering 25% off the total price of $11.99 on Amazon, with the code poptech9.
