Review: Ventev powercell 3015 battery charger

Ventev, a company that specializes in mobile accessories, was kind enough to provide me with a portable battery for review. After spending some time with it, I’ve gotten a pretty good feel for how it operates. Let’s see how things played out. Spoiler alert though, this is pretty nice.
Like many of the other products that the company sent me, the battery is stylized in the company’s colors, which are a dark gray, and bright orange. The battery’s also tagged once with the company name, and are otherwise bereft of markings, save for FCC information. While as they saying goes, that there’s no accounting for taste, I happen to like their color scheme.  The battery is a flat unit, gray on the broad sides and orange around the periphery, with the gray parts being the soft, rubbery styled material that enables a solid grip that shouldn’t slip out of the hand by mistake.

As for its performance, I have to say that I liked using it. It contains a 3,000 mAh cell on the inside, which should just about cover most smartphones these days; The S7 is 3,000 right on the button, and the LG G5 is slated to ship with a 2,800 mAh battery, so having a portable battery at 3,000 mAh is going to provide a helpful amount of juice, and will just about top off most of the modern phones, give or take. The exterior has two USB ports on the small, opposing ends of the battery, micro and standard sizes respectively (I’ll get back to these in a bit), while a power toggle and LED indicators run along one of the long and narrow sides, and all in matching orange. Having previously purchased and used a portable battery in the past, I found this one to be a refreshing change. First, I found the LED indicators to be quite a handy feature. They lit up both when the battery was in use, and while it was charging, allowing me to know how much charge is left for use, or how close it is to finishing charging. There are four LEDs to be specific. Once the battery falls short of 100%, the LED on one end begins to dim, and remains dimly lit until the charge is reduced to 75%, at which point it goes dark and the next LED down the line reduces from fully lit to dimly lit; this pattern continues until the battery gives out altogether, and reverses as it charges.

The battery puts out at 2.4 amps, and it seemed to perform like other, similar chargers, putting a good 23% charge on to my phone (Stock Nexus 6, with a 3,220 mAh battery) in thirty minutes of steady charging. The power toggle is a second, nice touch. It doesn’t just tap on and off either, but must be held for a very brief amount of time. One can only assume that is to prevent accidental taps if this is jostled around a bag or pocket. The unit doesn’t begin powering a device when it’s plugged in, but after the user also toggles the power button. I have a sneaking suspicion that this will allow it to retain its charge longer; the cell that I had previously purchased didn’t have a toggle, and would lose its charge over several weeks of inactivity, so the that battery wasn’t really there when I needed it. Not only does Ventev’s unit power on and off, but it comes with a decent amount of charge as well, right out of the box. When I first took it out of the packaging and used it, the unit had close to 75% charge that was ready to use. Given its slim size (think of a credit card, only make it an inch or so longer, and obviously not THAT flat), this fits easily into just about any pocket, and rests fairly flush; were another color scheme chosen, I would even dare say it borders on discreet. All that is to say that, if it’s being dropped into a bag or container of any sort, it shouldn’t take up much space at all, and will wait there with its charge until needed. And to wrap up the USB ports that I mentioned earlier, there is one of each size. When charging the unit, plug any USB cable with current into the micro sized port, or the Standard to Micro USB cable included. When drawing off of the battery, simply use the large end (inverting the included cable, or using another one). Cut and dry.
In short, using this battery was nice. I like its size and shape, the toggle, the LED indicators, and the fact that its ready to go, right out of the package. I’m giving it an 8, and it can be found on ventev’s website: https://mobileaccessories.ventev.com/products/portable-power/3569542__Ventev-powercell-3015-Battery-Charger-Power-Bank#/?color=410681ec46ba456eb20c18e0f24fbe09
