Smash Cops Heat Review

Smash Cops Heat Review

SCH

Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?

We’ve all seen the helicopter footage of some law-breaker trying to out-run cop cars, and had a little chuckle at their futile attempts to get away. Well that’s the scenario in this game (complete with helicopter noise as you play). However these are not just ordinary cops, they’re Smash Cops who run down and smash into their prey in order to get them to stop.

This top-down driving game has already been a big success on iOS, after Hutch Games revamped their premium Smash Cops game, added Heat to the title and began using the freemium payment model instead. Yes, you can play this game for free, so those of you with a short attention span can proceed straight to the Play Store link at the bottom of this page.

The game uses a control system I haven’t seen before, where you accelerate the car by holding your finger behind it and steer by dragging left or right. It works great, especially on a larger screen which gives you greater control and less tendency for your hand to block your view. Once you get close to the target vehicle you can hit the ram button to smash into it (preferably on the side or front). Enough smashes and it will be disabled, and you’ll be awarded up to 5 stars depending on your speed and damage sustained. Other levels involve navigating a course as quickly as possible and sometimes the villains will be chasing you. Later levels are only unlocked when you have enough stars.

The ram button takes time to recharge, so you can’t just repeatedly hit it to finish off your enemy. However you do have a limited number of Instaram powerups available allowing you to ram again right away. You also have some Super Cop powerups that make you indestructable for 6 seconds at a time. All very useful in getting the additional stars you’ll need to open up the later levels. Have you used all your powerups and want more? Then it’s time to pay up. Need more stars to unlock the later levels? Then you’ll need to either get really really good, or buy more powerups to help out.

If you’ve played any of the GTA games with the missions where you steal a police car then you’ll be on familiar territory here. However the graphics and music are top-notch, and the control system makes the best of the touch screen. Overall, this game is great fun and well worth downloading. In-app purchases will be required to progress far into the game, but those of us who don’t want to pay can still entertain themselves with the earlier levels. And in my book that’s fair enough.
