TYLT Zumo Portable Battery Pack Review

The TYLT Zumo is a small 1500mAh battery pack with flexible USB and micro USB cable connectors at either end.  It has four integrated LEDs that indicate charge level.  Due to it’s small size making a relatively short USB cable, it comes with a USB extension lead to help with those hard to reach places.  It charges up in 3 to 4 hours, and is advertised as retaining it’s charge for up to a year.

This unit is small and light, and can be left dangling from your phone while charging.  The connectors fold neatly in to either end of the battery when not in use, making the Zumo robust during transit.  Unfortunately the Zumo provides only power, and cannot be used to sync data.  This is a missed opportunity to compete directly with the likes of the ChargeCard which we reviewed in June.

The Zumo delivers a quick 1A charge, and a full battery was able to deliver an additional 38% charge to my Samsung Galaxy S4 in just 45 minutes with screen off.  The emphasis here is on portability and a quick boost rather than carrying a heavy battery that will last for days.  Due to the design the Zumo will only charge devices with Micro USB ports, so you can’t use it to power any other USB accessories that have a different connector.

I can see two scenarios where the Zumo is really useful.  The first is to use the Zumo to replace one of your existing cables (attached to your computer or a USB car adapter for instance) where it will give charge priority to your phone but get charged up when there’s power to spare.

The second is to leave it in your bag or pocket and use it as a portable tangle-free USB power cable.  Either way you’ll be glad you’re able to grab it in those times of battery crisis, so follow the link below to pick one up for $39.99 from the TYLT website.
