Follow the echoes of a lost civilization in a visually-stunning post-apocalyptic world where only robots survive to fight a never-ending war. Fight towards your goal and piece together the fragments to reveal exactly what happened when the old world ended. Is this the dawn of a new Epoch? And how can you find the one person you were originally assigned to protect?

Looks and Presentation..

Built on the Unreal Engine with stunning visuals, lighting and background detail, Epoch could be one of the best looking games available, this minute, for Android. A great showcase title, you could say. Attention to detail ranging from your robot character’s armour and weapon to the differences between close and far away targets has been really worked at here. What stood out for me was the clarity you could see the ‘bad guys’ coming from, a real range of scope from far away then to up close. Not really sure why something like this stood out but it did, to me. Background and scenery look awesome, you’ll not see any jagged edges or pixelation, all highly polished and looks well.

Game Play..

As the intro described you’re in a world where robots exist after some kind of disaster and you fight your way through gathering bits of intel that give you clues on what happened and what the story is about. Basically a ‘cover and shoot’ type game where you blast the enemy bots with weapons from the future, slide right and left, duck and flip around looking for cover and blast some more. Once you clear an area a cut scene progresses you forward to another scenario but this time it gets harder and harder. The enemy bots have some real badass weaponary that hurts so you never stay in one position long. Blast, duck, flip, move and blast……

In Game Currency and Pay to Win..

As with most games now this is very common but if you asked me “Is this game ruined by over the top and in your face options to pay more money,” I’d say no. I went looking for this screen, shown above, as I usually do when I’m thinking about reviewing a game. There’s always a little tab that says [double it] after every level but after a few you pay no attention and forget it’s there. Saying as I already paid for this game, there’s no silly adverts or such nonsense. The opportunity to spend real money is present but I’ve been getting along just fine without having to spend a penny more. (This makes me happy, obviously)

Replayability

You have the standard campaign mode which starts at easy then medium then hard.  Another very cool mode is Arena where there is no storyline just number of kills and things get real tough, real quick. When you finish all the Campaign difficulties you’ll have your high scores to beat in Arena and still actually earn credits and XP that lets you buy better Guns, Armour, Grenades, Explosives etc etc in the Scrapyard, you can also sell your items too. Loads to do, unlock and beat your high score! Should keep you busy for a while.

Conclusion

I’d highly recommend this game to everyone. Stunning graphics, fluid and responsive controls with fun and exciting game play that lets you get blasting and enjoying very quick.  A few things I noticed were…..

  • No back button or way to exit the game just hit Home (iOS port?)
  • Epoch have a Google Plus Page. (The option to +Epoch popped up and took me by surprise. Glad to see more companies doing this, kudos to them)
  • Very easy to learn the controls
  • Lots of reading to actually understand what the story is about. (I really don’t care because I’m a robot with some badass weapons)

As always he have provided a link to download. Should still be on sale for 99cents.
